Way to Visit Castle De Haar in the Netherlands

Kasteel/Haar Castle is the largest castle in the Netherlands and it is easy to visit it on a day trip to Haar Castle from Amsterdam, because it is close to Utrecht!

Also known in Dutch as Kasteel De Haar, this castle was never intended for war, but was (and still is) used as a kind of luxury house.

You can pay extra to go to the castle, and the interior is beautiful and it’s worth it. If you only have time to visit a castle in Holland, it should be!

Haar Castle Tour: what to expect

  • First things first: Haar Castle is surrounded by 135 acres of landscaped gardens with colorful flowers, ponds, deer and beautiful landscapes, so you have to explore first. It is the ideal place for a long walk or a picnic.
  • The exterior of Haar Castle is beautiful and photogenic, with all the usual features that you would expect from a medieval castle, such as towers, turrets, moats, gates and suspension bridges.

In the hair loop (inside)

  • The inside of the castle’s hair is just as gorgeous as the outside! If you buy a combined ticket, you can visit the interior at your discretion.
  • The interior of the Haar Castle is extremely detailed and beautiful, with luxurious rooms, sculptures and carvings, paintings, elegant furniture, stained glass windows, armor and much more. It feels like visiting an art museum.
  • The castle has 200 rooms! Even if you could only go through less than a dozen of them, the visit of the interior was very complete and well worth it.

How to get to Haar Castle

  • Haar Castle is located in Haarzuilens, just outside the city of Utrecht, in the Netherlands.
  • You can travel by bike, rental car (without driver), Taxi or public transport, or book a one-day package including pick-up and drop-off at The Amsterdam hotel. The castle is a 30-minute drive from Amsterdam or Utrecht.
  • You should allow more time for public transport to the central Amsterdam Castle. First you need to take the train to Utrecht Centraal, then take the train from Utrecht with the Den Haag
  • Centraal Route (4 times an hour) to Vleuten station.
  • If you arrive in Vleuten, take the 111 Bus to Kasteel De Haar, a 2-minute walk away (only available on summer weekends). Alternatively, you can take Bus 127 from Vleuten to Breukelen (Brink stop in Haarzuilens) which is a 15-minute walk from the castle.
