The Indonesian island of Komodo has a pink beach, famous for its bright red sand and turquoise waters, and the good news is that you can easily visit it even on a day trip from the city of Labuan Bajo!
You will be surprised to learn that this beach is not the only pink beach that Indonesia has to offer — there are still a few pink beaches in Komodo National Park as well as one on Lombok Island near Bali — but pink beaches are usually very rare and there are only a few. there are very few in the whole world!
This guide will show you how to visit the two unique beaches of Komodo – the pink beach on Komodo Island and the equally famous (and more colorful) pink beach on Padar Island!
Where is a pink sandy beach?
The pink sandy beaches are located in the Komodo National Park, a group of islands in the east of Indonesia.
The nearest town is the fishing village of Labuan Bajo in Flores, which has its own airport and many hotels and restaurants that you can enjoy between visits to the park.
How to get there
The only way to visit the pink beach is to take a boat trip from Labuan Bajo.
The beach of Komodo Island is located in a straight line about 40 kilometers from the city, and the trip usually takes 3 hours on a slow boat or less than half of this time on a speedboat.
You can visit all the main attractions of the Komodo National Park (including Pink Beach) for a day trip or stop at a submersible and spend a few days exploring the sights!
There are many flights from Bali to Labuan Bajo Airport (LBJ) every day, the flight duration is 1 hour, and several airlines offer tickets from 1 ( 70).
Getting from Bali to the Komodo Islands is easier than ever, as AirAsia flies between them several times a week. There are also flights from Jakarta, Surabaya or Ende to Labuan Bajo Airport. You can book flights with Skyscanner.
Once you have arrived in Labuan Bajo, you can book a boat trip to the pink beach of the port or book a tour online (more on that after).
What to expect
1. Pink beach on Padar Island
If you are looking for the brightest pink beach in Indonesia, you will find it on Padar Island! The color of the sand is actually brighter here than on the beach of Komodo Island, and we even found a heart-shaped piece of red coral in the sand
The color of this pink sandy beach may be a little exaggerated in the photos that you see all over the Internet, but the sand definitely has a striking pink hue, especially if you walk on it on a sunny day. In the sun, the red-pink sand becomes lighter.
2. The pink beach on the island of Komodo
This second pink beach is located right on the island of Komodo, the home of the famous Komodo dragons, although you will hardly see them walking here, since they live mainly in the hills.
The sand on this Komodo beach is not as pink or red as on Padar, but it is surrounded by high hills and mountains, and the coast itself is more photogenic (apart from the color of the sand).
There are also viewpoints that you can reach on foot for even superior views, and the varungi on Komodo Beach are shaded by trees, so they do not disturb the landscape too much.
Which pink Komodo beach is the best?
Of the two big pink beaches of the Komodo National Park, it’s hard to decide which one is superior: the one on Padar Island or the one on Komodo?
On the pink beach of Padar, the sand is noticeably more colorful, but on the pink beach of Komodo, the background for photos is superior, there are a lot of steep hills and trees.
If you can only see one of the pink beaches of Indonesia, I would generally prefer Padar Beach.
Why is sand pink?
Pink beaches seem to have received their color from foraminifera, which are microscopic red organisms that live in coral reefs and are thrown ashore.
A pink sandy beach, as a rule, is very rare, and there are few of them in the whole world. They occur even less often than black sandy beaches.
